The actor, who spends a lot of time in Europe and especially in France, did not make his request public. But, like many Hollywood professionals, the actor is increasingly dissatisfied with the politics led by Donald Trump in his country, writes the News.
The family has submitted an official application to the authorities in Var, where they have owned a property in Brignoles since 2021. At the same time as George Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin and their two children, Alexander and Ella, became French citizens.
“I like the French culture and your language, even if after 400 days of classes I'm still as weak”explained George Clooney on the RTL microphone, at the beginning of December. “The happiest place for us is this farm, where the kids are having fun, just like I did when I was a kid in Kentucky. I really like the life we lead there.”he added, referring to their property in Var.
“We don't take pictures of our children here. There are no hidden paparazzi outside the school. It's essential for us. We wanted a place where our children could have a chance to lead a normal life. That was the main reason.”
Purchased in 2021 by the couple, the property includes an 18th-century building set amidst 172 hectares of grounds with a swimming pool and tennis court.
In March, the president of the United States branded the star a “second-rate actor” after the actor raised concerns about press freedom in the United States. The Broadway play “Good Night, And Good Luck” got him thinking. Adapted from the film he produced, this is a thriller that features journalists confronted with the mysteries of American power. According to Clooney, the message is that “truth and journalistic integrity resist the fear of disinformation”. A speech that echoes today, with “a government that likes to fine or use companies to humiliate and intimidate journalists,” he said on the CBS microphone.
An ardent democrat, the actor does not regret his statements at all, even after Trump's mockery. “I don't care if they call me a second-rate actor,” George Clooney replied to CBS. “I have known Donald Trump for a very long time. My job is not to please the President of the United States. My job is to try to tell the truth when I can and when I have the opportunity”. The star of “Ocean's Eleven” declares that she is aware that “this idea cannot be to everyone's liking”. The proof is that “Elon Musk has already said what he thinks of me,” he jokes. The actor recalls that he has “the right to express one's truth, even if it is contrary to that of the Republicans”.
Last week, another Hollywood personality expressed his desire to become a French citizen: Jim Jarmusch. The director stated that he started the necessary steps, being in search of “a place that would allow him to escape from the United States”. “The steps are underway, he told France Inter. I'm a little late, but yes, I will.”
