Lavrov answered who the Russian Federation will support in the event of an “escalation of the situation” in Taiwan

Lavrov noted that Moscow “recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China” and “opposes the independence of the island in any form.”

In 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping promised to carry out peaceful “reunification” with Taiwan. Taipei responded by vowing to defend its freedom and emphasizing that only the people of Taiwan can decide their future.

“With regard to the possible aggravation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, the procedure for action in such situations is prescribed in the Treaty with the People’s Republic of China on Good Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation dated July 16, 2001, fundamental to bilateral relations. One of the basic principles laid down in this document is mutual support in matters of protecting state unity and territorial integrity,” Lavrov said.

On December 26, Beijing imposed sanctions against US companies and individuals over arms sales to Taiwan amid increasing military and diplomatic pressure on the island from China.

The United States, which is the guarantor of Taiwan's security, considers deepening cooperation between China and the Russian Federation a “serious threat”, which is why rapprochement with the Russian Federation is so important for Washington in order to “tear” Moscow away from Beijing, Ukrainian military intelligence said.

Context

Taiwan (officially the Republic of China) and the People's Republic of China are separated by the Taiwan Strait. Since 1949, Taiwan has been governed by its own administration, retaining the flag and some other attributes of the Republic of China that existed on the mainland before the Communist Party of China came to power, but it has not officially declared its independence. According to With The official position of the PRC is that the island is considered one of the provinces of China.

In 1979, the US Congress accepted Taiwan Relations Act, under which the U.S. can supply defense weapons there and are the guarantor of the security of the island. The administration of former US President Joe Biden supported Taiwan and provided military assistance to the island for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Relations between China and Taiwan have deteriorated in recent years. A number of analysts believe that the Chinese army could attack Taiwan at any time.
