Lavrov noted that Moscow “recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China” and “opposes the independence of the island in any form.”

“With regard to the possible aggravation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, the procedure for action in such situations is prescribed in the Treaty with the People’s Republic of China on Good Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation dated July 16, 2001, fundamental to bilateral relations. One of the basic principles laid down in this document is mutual support in matters of protecting state unity and territorial integrity,” Lavrov said.
