Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Saturday to an “immediate ceasefire” in the border conflict that has claimed at least 47 lives and nearly a million displaced in three weeks, according to a joint statement seen by AFP.

“Both sides agree to an immediate ceasefire upon the signature of this joint declaration, effective from 12:00 (local time, i.e. 05:00 GMT) on December 27, 2025.”we read in a document signed by the defense ministers of both Southeast Asian neighbors, AFP reported.
The clashes taking place on part of the 800-kilometer Thai-Cambodian border are the result of a long-term territorial conflict resulting from the inaccuracy of maps drawn up in the early 20th century. As a result, both sides of the conflict are making claims to some of the border areas, including strategically important passes.
In July, the territorial dispute turned into a direct armed confrontation on the Cambodia-Thai border. At least 43 people died then. At the end of October, Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement, negotiated with the participation of US President Donald Trump. However, it was broken just a few weeks later. (PAP)
