The punishment sought by the special prosecutor concerns obstructing arrest attempts after the failed attempt to impose martial law in early December last year. As reported by the Yonhap agency, this concerns the events of January this year, when Jun barricaded himself in the presidential complex and – according to prosecutors – prevented investigators from arresting him.

Jun faces several charges in total, the most serious of which is an attempted coup, for which he faces life imprisonment or the death penalty. The accusation is related to the martial law declared on December 3, 2024. The former president canceled its validity after a few hours. In April this year he was removed from power and has been in custody since July 10.

The former president's wife also faces charges

At the same time, proceedings are underway against the former president's wife, Kim Keon Hi, against whom the prosecutor's office demanded a 15-year prison sentence at the beginning of December. She is accused of violating the Capital Market Act and accepting bribes. The former first lady pleads not guilty.

According to the prosecutor's office, in 2010-2012, Kim allegedly colluded with the former head of Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea, in order to manipulate the company's share prices. The illegal profits from this practice were to amount to the equivalent of approximately PLN 552.6 thousand. dollars. The former first lady was accused of using public opinion research worth PLN 184,000 for free with her husband. dollars that helped Jun shape his campaign for the 2022 elections. Kim is also accused of accepting luxury gifts worth PLN 54,500. dollars from the Unification Church.

Kim has been in custody since August 12. A court in Seoul is scheduled to announce a verdict in her case on January 28.
