Stere Gulea, the director of the films “Moromeții”, stated in an interview for News.ro that, in his opinion, only about a third of Romanian society shares “Western values”, and part of the population “has big identity problems, because many things have been lost”.

“It looks like it will go through an autocratic regime,” said the director, referring to Romania.

“I'm afraid so! Not now, but in the hard to predict future I think so. And she won't be the only one in the area, you know! I think so,” he continued.

Stere Gulea specified that he refers to a regime similar to those in Hungary and Turkey, rather than to the one in Russia.

“Gen Orban, Erdogan. This area. From many points of view, it is most likely to be something like this, because society, people are at this level, you know! As an aspiration! They don't have Western aspirations, you know! I say that only somewhere, 30% of the population of Romania, identifies with Western values. Part of the population that, in turn, has big identity problems, because many things have been lost. All the changes, the so-called modernization of the world Westerners, with all these freedoms, it's hard to make a choice with them, you know!” added Gulea.

He suggested that the political future will also depend on the firmness and degree of commitment with which the West will manage to defend its values.

“But you see what's happening to them too! France is an ungovernable country, in Germany the extreme right is strong. So, the two most important countries… At least France is in a very bad moment! Precarious, downright,” said the director.

The Legionary Movement “is primitivism”

Stere Gulea said that during the legionary period the Aromanians produced “many people who sympathized with the Movement”, and in Dobrogea there are people who are “dismayed” that he does not sympathize with this current.

“The bottom line is that some of them keep trying to appeal to me as a person who comes from this geographical area. But they have no chance, because I told you, this whole thing was and is foreign to me, which, forgive me, I don't want to offend, but it's primitivism! Even if legionaryism was embraced, at one point, by some important Romanian intellectuals, it's hard for me to understand. Well, I understand that there were the same problems of corruption, of politicking, of lack of perspective and so on. Perhaps more serious then than for us now,” he added.
