England's Football Association (FA) Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against Tottenham captain Cristian Romero for what it described as “inappropriate behaviour” after he was sent off in the 1-2 Premier League match against Liverpool.

On December 20, in London, Liverpool players beat Tottenham 2-1, and Romero received a red card in the 90th+3rd minute. Tottenham finished the match with nine men as Xavi Simons was also sent off in the 33rd minute.

Cristian Romero may receive a severe suspension

The Tottenham captain did not immediately leave the field after receiving the red card as he stepped on Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate and argued with head referee John Brooks.

“Romero behaved inappropriately as he did not leave the pitch immediately. He was aggressive towards the referee after being sent off in the 90+3rd minute. Romero has until January 2 to respond to the charge, the FA said in an official statement.

Dismissal means he must serve a one-match ban and will miss Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace.

Tottenham are 14th in the table with 22 points, 17 points behind leaders and arch-rivals Arsenal. Romero arrived at Tottenham from Atalanta in 2022. With the Londoners he won the Europa League last season.
