The administration of the Republican President of the USA, Donald Trump, will recall from their posts dozens of ambassadors appointed under the previous administration of the Democratic President Joe Biden, as part of a wide-ranging reshuffle aimed at aligning the diplomatic corps with the new foreign policy priorities of the USA, say sources quoted by AFP on Monday, according to Agerpres.

These ambassadors, most of whom are career diplomats, were informed of the end of their mission by the end of January, according to the same sources, who confirm media reports that some 30 ambassadors, mainly from Africa, have been recalled from their posts.

Although it is common in the practice of US diplomacy for a new administration to replace ambassadors appointed by the previous administration, often those ambassadors being selected from among donors or supporters of the winning president, such a recall of ambassadors who are career diplomats is less common, and they are usually allowed to serve out their term or at least remain in the post until a replacement arrives.

Contacted by AFP, the US State Department would not confirm the details of these recalls, but noted that “this is standard process in any administration.”

“An ambassador is a personal representative of the president,” and President Trump “has the right to make sure that he has people in these countries who are promoting the America first agenda,” explained a senior State Department official, who asked to remain anonymous.

After returning to power in January, President Donald Trump and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio initiated a sweeping reform of US diplomacy focused on US priorities, including combating illegal migration, cutting foreign aid and eliminating progressive DEI (“diversity, equity and inclusion”) programs.

Hundreds of State Department employees involved in such activities were forced to look for other jobs, and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which Trump accused of supporting the “fake news media” favorable to Joe Biden's Democrats, was disbanded.

In addition to purely humanitarian actions, USAID finances abroad from its annual budget of about 40 billion dollars also NGOs, activists and the media to promote “good democratic practices”, thus being accused of supporting ideological causes and involvement in actions to destabilize some governments.
