December 22, 1989 marked the collapse of the Ceaușescu regime, after a week of violently repressed protests. The dictator's escape by helicopter opened the way for political change and officially ended the communist dictatorship in Romania.

1956 – Death of the poet Nicolae Labiș

Nicolae Labiș died on December 22, 1956, at the age of 21, following an accident in Bucharest. The poet, born in 1935, was considered one of the most promising literary voices of the post-war generation, active in the period of socialist realism, but with texts in which tendencies of separation from dogma were observed.

In his short career, Labiș published volumes such as “First Loves” and “Fighting Inertia”and poetry “Death of the Deer” became one of the most famous creations in post-war Romanian literature. He was a member of the Writers' Union and won the attention of critics for his social themes, civic attitude and literary potential considered outstanding for his age.

1974 – Birth of Andrea Marin

Andreea Marin was born on December 22, 1974, in Roman, and became one of the most famous TV presenters in Romania. He graduated from the Faculty of Computer Science in Iasi, and his career in television began in the 90s.

Her most important professional project was the show “Surprises, Surprises”broadcast between 1999 and 2007, a program that recorded large audiences at the national level. Marin was a UNICEF ambassador for Romania, presented various galas and televised events, and was involved in social campaigns and media projects with major public impact.

1989 – Escape of Nicolae Ceaușescu

On December 22, 1989, after protests in Bucharest and other cities, Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena fled in a helicopter from the PCR Central Committee building. The event followed a week of violently repressed demonstrations, resulting in casualties in Timișoara and Bucharest.

The escape of the Ceaușescu couple marked the official collapse of the communist regime in Romania. The crowd gathered in the center of the Capital cheered the leader's departure, and on the same day power was taken over by the Council of the National Salvation Front, which announced the removal of the dictatorship.

1989 – Reopening of the Brandenburg Gate

Berlin's Brandenburg Gate reopened on December 22, 1989, after nearly three decades of separation between East and West Germany. The monument had been blocked since the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, representing one of the most visible symbols of European division during the Cold War.

The official reopening came after the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, and was a significant diplomatic and historical moment for the process of German reunification. The event was marked by the presence of political leaders from both German states and the free access of the population to the crossing between east and west.

2017 – UN Resolution 2397 against North Korea

On December 22, 2017, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2397 in response to North Korea's ballistic tests. The document imposed new sanctions, including further limitations on North Korean imports, restrictions on North Korean workers abroad and tighter controls on transportation.

The resolution was co-sponsored by the United States and had the support of all 15 members of the Council. It was one of the toughest economic measures taken against the Pyongyang regime, following diplomatic pressure to suspend North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
