Lincoln Red Imps failed to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Conference League, but the Gibraltar outfit will go down in the history of European competitions. Lee Casciaro, the team's striker-policeman, became the oldest player ever to feature in a European competition.

Born in 1981, Casciaro entered the field at the age of 44, in the last match of the Conference League group, against Legia Warsaw, marking an absolute record in continental football.

Lee Casciaro debuted in football last century and played for only one team

The moment is all the more special as Lee Casciaro played his entire career at Lincoln Red Imps, the club for which he made his debut in 1998, in the last millennium. He caught all the stages of development of football in Gibraltar, including the period when the local teams did not have the right to participate in European cups.

After ticking off a few minutes in the Europa League preliminaries as well, Casciaro was also introduced to the field in the Conference League, thus becoming the longest-serving player in the history of UEFA competitions.

Striker on the field, policeman in everyday life

In addition to his football career, Casciaro is a police officer and works for the Ministry of Defense in Gibraltar.

“I've been a cop for 22 years and I've only arrested one person. I'm a good cop.

It's more like a military base. We deal with the security of ships and the military,” Casciaro told talkSPORT.

Most of his Lincoln Red Imps teammates are now full-time professionals.

European goals and an impressive career

Even at an advanced age, Lee Casciaro remained decisive. Last season, he scored in the Europa League qualifiers in a 2-1 win against Dinamo Minsk. Over time, he also scored in Europe against teams such as Celtic, Torshavn or Santa Coloma.

His stats at Lincoln Red Imps are remarkable:

  • 263 matches

  • 83 goals

  • 28 assists

For the national team of the state of Gibraltar, Casciaro collected 67 caps and scored 3 goals, against Georgia, Cyprus and Scotland.
