The Minister of Economy, Radu Miruţă, said on Thursday, following the proposal to take over the portfolio of the Ministry of Defense, that “the studies of the Ministers of Defense from the 90s onwards must be seen”, and his studies, and “everyone can make a comparison”.

“We looked at what the criteria are for what is happening at the Ministry of Defense to be put on its feet faster, from the perspective of the arrival of a new minister, and the common point between the options we had at the USR was that involvement in that endowment program of the Romanian Army, SAFE, which I took care of. I think, in my estimation, that in the six months at the Ministry of Economy I showed that I can put an institution on its feet that was not really working”, said Minister Radu Miruţă, in the show România Politică from Prima News, quoted by News.ro.

“The studies I have, those of software engineering in communications, fit a technical profile”

Miruță stated that it was a proposal from his colleagues in the leadership of the party who honor him, considering that he can face the challenges there.

Asked about the fact that he does not have studies in the military area, Miruţă answered: “Look at the studies of the Ministers of Defense from the 90s and look at my studies and everyone can make a comparison. The studies I have, those of software engineering in communications, fit a technical profile”, said Miruţă.

He specified that there is a debate “if there should be a military man in defense or if there should be a civilian in defense to compensate a little for this military structure, from the perspective of political control”.

“On the same principle, the Romanian information system, this secret intelligence service, is civilian controlled. The military does its job well, but from my point of view there must also be political responsibility for what happens to the sums of money managed by the Ministry of Defense in a NATO member country, on the border with another country at war. The same thing happens at the Ministry of Defense. It is only politically driven in principle,” Miruţă also said.

The position of Minister of Defense remained vacant after the resignation of Ionuț Moșteanu, following the revelations in Libertatea regarding his studies. The termination was provided by Radu Miruță.
