NASA has a new boss, private astronaut Jared Isaacman. The billionaire has a close relationship with Elon Musk

The US Senate has confirmed the appointment of billionaire Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator, at the suggestion of President Donald Trump. Thus, the first private astronaut in history becomes the 15th leader of the American space agency.

The confirmation was approved with 67 votes in favor and 30 against. Of the favorable votes, 51 came from Republicans and 16 from Democrats, while all the votes against belonged to Democrats, notes Reuters.

The decision comes two weeks after Jared Isaacman's second Senate hearing, in which he argued that NASA needs to pick up the pace to overtake China in the race to the moon this decade.

Jared Isaacman will lead an agency with approximately 14,000 employees responsible for some of the most ambitious space missions in history. NASA is investing billions of dollars in the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon and establish a long-term human presence as a step towards manned missions to Mars.

Tense context for NASA

His appointment comes in a difficult context for the US space agency. The Trump administration, as part of efforts to streamline the government coordinated by Elon Musk, reduced NASA staff by about 20% and proposed for 2026 a decrease in the budget by about 25% from the usual level of $25 billion. The scientific community is warning that dozens of space research programs could be jeopardized.

Isaacman advocates a stronger focus on Mars missions, without abandoning the Artemis program, and advocates working more closely with the private sector, especially companies like SpaceX, to lower costs and boost competition. That vision has generated controversy, however, given his close relationship with Elon Musk, whose group holds contracts with NASA worth about $15 billion.

During the hearings, several Democratic senators raised concerns about a possible conflict of interest.

Who is Jared Isaacman?

Jared Isaacman, 42, is the founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments and made history as the first commander of a completely private space mission. In 2021, he led the Inspiration4 mission, and in September 2024 he returned to orbit as part of the Polaris Dawn mission, where he participated in the world's first private spacewalk.

After being temporarily withdrawn from the race to lead NASA amid the public spat between Donald Trump and Elon Musk, Isaacman was renominated in early November.
