On December 26, one of the most unusual zoos in Krasnoyarsk, “Raccoon Country”, will celebrate its 10th anniversary. During this time, about 300 thousand people managed to visit it. The director of the institution, Igor Smolin, spoke about this.
“Why did we create the Raccoon Country zoo? So that kids living in a big city can see a bunny, a fox or a tiny raccoon not only in pictures. But over time we realized that this is a zoo for adults too. I had no doubts about success, I was confident that Krasnoyarsk residents would appreciate the importance of such a zoo,” said Smolin.

According to him, the mission of the zoo is to preserve the connection between people and animals, making this contact comfortable for both parties. Now the zoo, which positions itself as the most “touching” in the city, is home to 135 pets.
A special feature of “Raccoon Country” is its strong connection with the townspeople.
“There are families who have been with us since our founding: they came to us as teenagers, and now their children are asking us to come to the zoo as volunteers. It was the city residents who helped us survive the pandemic,” the director noted.
