On this day, the Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of Ignatius the God-Bearer – the so-called Ignatius of Antioch, who lived in the 1st and 2nd centuries and was a disciple of John the Theologian.
In Rus', this day was dedicated to the house where a person was born, raised and received a blessing for an independent life. People served prayer services to Ignatius the God-Bearer to protect their homes from any misfortune. In addition, it was necessary to bow to the house and walk around the village in a procession with the icon.
This date was also considered “apple day”: it was supposed to clear the apple trees of frost and snow so that the harvest would be rich. It was believed that the weather on this day predicted the weather in August, the month when apples ripen.
