A woman kidnapped as a child at the age of three has been found alive more than 40 years later. What happened to her all this time

The case of the disappearance of a three-year-old girl from Kentucky, USA, in the 1980s, was recently solved, more than four decades later. The victim, Michelle Newton, was found in another state, alive and unharmed, following an investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The woman had no idea that she had been kidnapped.
Michelle Newton was reported missing along with her mother in April 1983 when the child was 3 years old, according to USA Today.
His mother, Debra Leigh Curry Newton, said he was moving to Georgia for a new job. Then, in 1985, after a “last call” to her father, Joseph Newton, the two disappeared without a trace.
The search for Debra and Michelle continued until 2000, after which the case was closed as prosecutors were unable to make contact with Joseph.
In 2005, Michelle was removed from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's databases. At that time, she would have been about 25 years old.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating
A family member later asked the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Kentucky for help, and authorities reopened the investigation in 2015. The case was then reopened in 2016.

Michelle Newton was recently found in another state, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesman Stephan Johnson said.
Colonel Steve Healey, deputy chief, described the resolution as right “extraordinary” explaining that such a case occurs only once in a career.
“Detectives refused to let their trail run cold. Their work — and the courage of a Crime Stoppers informant — brought a daughter home to her family after four decades.”
How it was found
This year, a tip from Marion County, Fla., led to a possible match for a 66-year-old woman using a different name. Investigators confirmed Debra Newton's identity through photographs and DNA testing and issued a warrant in her name.
Body camera footage of Marion County deputies arresting Debra Newton has gone viral on social media
After apprehending Debra, who some time ago was on the FBI's “Top 8 Most Wanted Fugitives for Parental Kidnapping”, the police went to the door of Michelle, who had been using the name “Sharon Nealy” all this time and had no idea that she was actually someone else
“You are not who you think you are. You are a missing person. You are Michelle Marie Newton”the police told her, according to Michelle's statements.
Michelle called the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and was reunited with her father after more than four decades.
Debra Newton was charged with custodial interference, which has no statute of limitations. The woman pleaded not guilty during her first trial on December 8. Sheriff's Office officials said he voluntarily appeared in court.
The next court appearance is scheduled for January 23, 2026.
We recall that in 2023, 15-year-old Kayla Unbehaun of South Elgin was found in North Carolina nearly six years after she was kidnapped by her own mother.
In 2011, a young girl kidnapped from a New York hospital just 19 days after she was born was reunited with her mother 23 years later after contacting the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
