Which films entered the short list of nominations for the 2026 Oscar Awards / What was Romania's proposal

The American Film Academy announced on Tuesday the short lists of proposals for nomination in 12 of the categories within the 98th edition of the Oscar Awards, including the “best international feature film” category, informs Agerpres.

Members of various branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States (AMPAS), the institution that awards the Academy Awards, participated in preliminary voting in several categories, including “international feature”, “animated short”, “documentary feature”, “documentary short”, “live action short”, “make-up and hair”, “soundtrack”, “original song”, “sound” and “visual effects”.

The year 2025 also marks the debut of shortlists for outstanding achievements in the categories “best cast” and “best picture”, both of which are included for the first time in this intermediate selection process.

Following the official announcement on Tuesday, the films “Sinners” and “Wicked: For Good” received the most nomination proposals – seven each. The film “Frankenstein” was ranked next, with six nomination proposals.

The film proposed by Romania did not make the short list

The film “Theft of the Century” / “Traffic”, directed by Teodora Ana Mihai and written and produced by Cristian Mungiu, Romania's official proposal for an Oscar nomination in the “best international feature” category, was not included on this short list.

The date of the Oscars 2026

In the “best international feature” category, the following films were proposed for nomination: “Belen” (Argentina), “The Secret Agent” (Brazil), “It Was Just an Accident” (France), “Sound of Falling” (Germany), “Homebound” (India), “The President's Cake” (Iraq), “Kokuho” (Japan), “All That's Left of You” (Jordan), “Sentimental Value” (Norway), “Palestine 36” (Palestine), “No Other Choice” (South Korea), “Sirat” (Spain), “Late Shift” (Switzerland), “Left Handed Girl” (Taiwan), “The Voice of Hind Rajab” (Tunisia).

The Oscar voting process, which will determine the final nominations in all 24 categories, will begin on January 12, 2026 and end on January 16, 2026. The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026.

Conan O'Brien will return to host the Oscars, which will take place in Los Angeles on March 2, 2026.
