Chinese state media reported in early November that the aircraft carrier had entered service. Beijing considers the Taiwan Strait, one of the world's most important trade routes, as its territorial waters. This position is opposed by the United States and its allies, who consider it to be international waters.
Chinese military activity around the island is part of a campaign of growing military and diplomatic pressure that Beijing is exerting on democratically ruled Taiwan. China considers the island its territory and does not rule out using force to take control of it.
In response to the threat, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te announced increased defense spending.
