Before starting his official visit to Finland, President Nicușor Dan said that, “within the limits of his constitutional powers”, he will act to defend the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.

“I am leaving for the summit in Helsinki, but I am taking with me the concerns of society related to the functioning of justice, which I share,” President Nicușor Dan said on his Facebook page on Monday morning.

The President begins a two-day visit to Finland today, where he has scheduled high-level meetings, and on Tuesday, December 16, he will attend the Eastern Flank EU Summit.

“The problems reported in the public space are serious, but they can be solved. Within the limits of my constitutional powers, I will act to defend the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law. The rule of law is not negotiable”, added Nicușor Dan.

“In order for Romania to be a respected state externally, it must, above all, have correct, credible and functional institutions internally. The two objectives are not mutually exclusive, but mutually supportive. The security of the state starts from within,” the president added.

Demonstrations for the independence of justice

Thousands of people protested, for five consecutive days, in Bucharest and in other cities in the country, after the publication of the documentary “Captured Justice”, made by Recorder on the justice system.

On Sunday evening, thousands of people marched through the center of Bucharest, from University Square to Victoriei Square, in the fifth day of protests triggered after the publication of the documentary.

Protests have taken place since Wednesday, the day after the documentary was released, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. According to the organizers, the demands of the protests aim at changes in the management and functioning of the judicial system.

The protesters also demanded the revocation of the president of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Lia Savonea, the dismissal of the leadership of the National Anticorruption Directorate and the dismissal of the Minister of Justice, Cătălin Predoiu, in whose mandate the facts reported in the Recorder documentary occurred.

On December 11, President Nicușor Dan invited the magistrates who want to report integrity issues in the justice system to a discussion “without time limit” at the Cotroceni Palace, on December 22.

The president stated that during the entire week of December 15-19 he is out of the country “for multilateral formats and bilateral visits confirmed long before”.
