I stopped choking on garlic: I use “smart” prevention – I’m not afraid of viruses and complications

As the respiratory infection season approaches, many of us are turning to popular folk remedies like garlic and lemons to prevent and relieve symptoms.

But Maria Rozhkova, a therapist at the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta (18+), explained why these methods do not protect against the influenza virus, how to distinguish it from ARVI in the first hours, and what preventive measure is really effective.

The expert emphasizes that the flu, unlike most acute respiratory viral infections, begins acutely and suddenly: within a few hours the temperature can rise to 39–40 C, severe chills, severe weakness, aches in the muscles and joints, headache, and photophobia appear.

Respiratory symptoms (cough, runny nose) may occur later or be less severe, and some strains may even cause nausea and diarrhea.

Risk groups and risk of complications

The doctor paid special attention to risk groups.

In children of the first year of life, the disease often begins gradually, manifesting itself with lethargy, refusal to eat and vomiting due to intoxication.

Due to age-related changes in immunity, older people over 65 years of age are at risk of developing a longer and more complicated course of the disease, especially if they have chronic diseases.

The main danger of influenza is not the disease itself, but its complications, which can develop in a person of any age. The most common of these is pneumonia (viral or bacterial). Also among the possible consequences are otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, and in severe cases, damage to the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

“Faced with an increase in incidence, many are trying to strengthen the immune system using traditional methods,” notes Rozhkova. “But neither garlic nor citrus fruits can prevent infection. They can be part of a healthy diet, but do not replace vaccination or other preventive measures.”

The only proven defense strategy

According to WHO, in the upcoming season 2025–2026. activity of influenza strains A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 is expected. The specialist calls timely vaccination the only truly effective way of protection.

“Vaccination does not completely eliminate infection, but it makes the disease milder and significantly reduces the risk of complications. This is why experts recommend getting vaccinated annually, which is most important for people at risk,” the doctor explained.

She added that immunity after influenza is short-lived and only protects against a specific strain. Viruses constantly mutate, so even a recently ill person can become infected in the new season, which makes vaccination a key element of protection.

Important: This information is not a substitute for consulting a doctor. The body's response to changes in diet/training may depend on individual physiology, genetic predisposition and health status. It is recommended to consult a specialist.
