A study by researchers at Liverpool John Moores University shows that people who do not drink enough water have significantly higher levels of stress hormone, cortisol, in tense situations, reports the Daily Mail.

Constant cortisol growth is associated with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression and anxiety. Also, chronic stress weakens the immune system, increasing vulnerability to disease.

The research involved 32 volunteers: half were limited to 1.5 liters of water per day, and the others consumed the recommended quantity (1.5-2 liters). The hydration level was monitored by urine and blood tests before a stress test that simulates a real situation: an improvised employment interview followed by an quick mental calculation sample.

The results showed that less hydrated people had more accentuated cortisol growths, even if physical stress signs – accelerated pulse, palm sweating or dry mouth – have been similar in both groups.

“Cortisol is the main stress hormone, and exaggerated reactions can lead to heart disease, diabetes and depression in time.” explained Professor Neil Walsh, the study coordinator.

He recommends holding a bottle of water at hand, especially during the demanding periods, and draws attention to that additional research is needed to evaluate whether better hydration can reduce the body's reactions to daily stress.

The specialists recommend the consumption of 6–8 glasses of water daily, the equivalent of 1.5-2 liters. The quantity must be adjusted according to the temperature, level of activity, health or special periods, such as pregnancy and breastfeeding.
