What will the weather be like at Christmas? Where will it snow and what temperatures will be in the country

If you dream of a snowy Christmas, we most likely won't have it this year either. At least in the plains. Meteorologists say that snow is possible only in the mountains and in the depressions. In the Capital, we could rather talk about sleet and rain. And the temperatures will be above the average for the period.

What temperatures will we have for Christmas
Temperatures will be higher than usual for this period, forecasters believe. Clearer data will be available closer to the Feast.
“From the estimates we have at the moment, the ones for four weeks, it seems that during the Christmas period the maximums will be somewhat higher than what we should record during this period. Concretely, we should have temperatures throughout the country between -2 degrees in the depressions of southeastern Transylvania and up to 5-6 degrees on the coast, with 2-3 degrees in the Capital. It is estimated that during the Christmas period, temperatures will be slightly higher than these”says Iris Răducanu, ANM meteorologist.
If the estimates will hold, then it means that even at night we will have temperatures above the average for the period. Everything is due “southern circulation that favors the penetration of a warmer air mass”. Moreover, these days are also warmer than those specific to the date in the calendar. The trend of increasing temperatures has already appeared for several years. For seven years now, for example, Bucharest and the south of the country have had positive temperatures on Christmas Eve.
What precipitation might occur
“It is difficult to estimate at this moment if there will be precipitation, but according to the temperatures now, and if it did occur, it could be in the form of sleet during the night in the Capital, but also in the form of sleet and snow, especially through the north of the territory and through depression regions. And, of course, in the mountains, where, if precipitation occurs, it will be in the form of snow”says the meteorologist.
How many years has it not snowed at Christmas in Bucharest
In Bucharest, it hasn't snowed at Christmas since 2018. Even then, the snow layer was small, between 10 and 20 centimeters, shows an analysis carried out by the physicist Bogdan Antonescu. The last serious snowfall on Christmas Day was 13 years ago in 2012.

In recent years, the tendency has been for snow to appear at the end of January. And let's have fewer and fewer snowy days. In the last 100 years, we've gone from nearly two snowy months a year to 29 days. The following data were recorded at the Bucharest Băneasa weather station:
- 1926-1955: 53 snow days/year
- 1961-2022: 43 days with snow/year
- 1991-2020: 43 snow days/year
- 2013-2022: 29 snow days/year
