The use of the TBM “Karpatka” machine, provided by the Spanish company Acciona Construccion in cooperation with Mostostal Warszawa, allows the investment to be carried out in difficult geological conditions.
The TBM machine has impressive parameters: 114 m long, 15 m wide and weighs 4,400 tons. Its hydraulic-electric drive, 12 engines with a total power of 12 MW and 471 cutting tools allow for effective tunnel drilling at a depth exceeding 100 m.

It was originally assumed that drilling one nave would take about 10 months, but complicated geological and hydrological conditions, as well as the detection of methane in July 2023, extended the process.
During the drilling of the first nave, approximately 950,000 tons of excavated material, 23 thousand were used MWh of electricity and over 11,000 housing elements. The production of the elements took place on site, in the prefabrication hall in Lutoryż, where the Passenger Service Area (MOP Lutoryż) will ultimately be built.

After completing the first aisle, preparations for the rotation of the TBM machine began, which is expected to take approximately three months. This process requires inspection, service and possible repairs of the device. Additionally, modifications to the machine are planned to improve its operation when drilling the second nave.

Completion of the construction of the tunnel, which is a key element of the Via Carpatia route, is planned for January 2028. The current overall progress of the works is approximately 57%.
The S19 expressway is part of the international Via Carpatia route connecting Northern and Southern Europe. In Poland, the route will be approximately 700 km long.
