King Charles said on Friday that doctors will be able to reduce his cancer treatment from next year, describing the moment as “a blessing” and a testament to remarkable medical advances, writes Reuters.

Charles, 77, was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in February and the latest announcement was made in a televised message broadcast as part of a national cancer awareness campaign in Britain.

“I can share the good news that, thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and following the doctors' orders, my cancer treatment can be reduced starting next year,” he said.

“This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testament to the remarkable advances made in cancer care in recent years.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the king's medical treatment would now enter a “precautionary phase” but doctors would continue to monitor his health.

Public statements about his cancer experience and health are unusual for the royal family, which has traditionally kept few details about its members' personal lives.

According to the same spokesperson, the oncology specialist's recommendation is that “it is preferable for Her Majesty not to speak about her own specific condition, but to address all those affected by any form of the disease”.

Tests had detected cancer following corrective surgery to enlarge the prostate, Buckingham Palace announced in February 2024. At the time, the palace said it would not provide regular updates on the treatment and did not provide details on the type of cancer.

After a period away from the limelight, Charles, who ascended the throne in 2022, resumed his public duties in April this year with a busy schedule of ceremonies, official appearances and trips abroad.

In March, Buckingham Palace announced that the king had been briefly hospitalized after suffering side effects from cancer treatment, without providing further details.

In a message to attendees at a reception for cancer charities in April, Charles spoke of his own experience with the disease, saying it showed him “the best in humanity”.

Maggie's, a leading cancer support charity, said in July that both Charles and his daughter-in-law Kate's public battles with the disease had had a major impact on other patients, encouraging them to speak openly about the difficulties of coping with the disease.
