Traffic on the Giurgiu bridge will resume completely during the winter holidays. When will the works on the Bulgarian side be resumed?

The Giurgiu Prefecture announces that during the holidays it will be possible to drive on the Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge, with traffic to be opened on December 18. The works will resume in the area on January 8, informs News.ro.

“The Bulgarian authorities, through the Joint Contact Center, inform that on December 18, 2025, traffic on the Giurgiu – Ruse Friendship Bridge will be restored in both directions, including on the repaired section of the bridge,” Giurgiu Prefecture announced on Thursday evening.

The institution specified that the construction works on the currently closed 320-meter section in the direction of Romania are close to completion, and during the Christmas and New Year holidays, all types of vehicles will be able to circulate without restrictions.

“The elimination of traffic restrictions will ensure a safe and as comfortable passage for travelers,” Giurgiu Prefecture also sent.

Construction and installation works are scheduled to resume on January 8, 2026, on the next 320 meters of the Bridge, on the traffic lane towards the Republic of Bulgaria.

The Bulgarians have been doing consolidation work for almost 2 years

At the bridge over the Danube, on a 1.1 kilometer section, the Bulgarian side has been working on strengthening the structure since spring 2024. Work is underway to replace the bridge slab, asphalt pavement and all metal elements related to the traffic lane. The cost of the works amounts to approximately 22 million euros.

The Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge is the most important link between Bulgaria and Romania, a structure over which thousands of cars and 1,000 TIRs pass daily, according to the statistics of the Romanian authorities.

At the same time, during the summer season, over 1 million Romanians cross the Friendship Bridge and Bulgaria to reach Greece.
