Liberal deputy Ionel Bogdan, president of PNL Maramureş, announced on Wednesday evening that the parliamentarians of the formation have submitted a legislative initiative for December 29 to become the National Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Legionary Movement, informs News.ro.

“Interwar Romania went through one of the most violent and turbulent periods in its history, marked by the rise of the Legionary Movement, an extremist, radical and profoundly anti-democratic organization. On December 29, 1933, Prime Minister Ion Gheorghe Duca was assassinated on the platform of the Sinaia train station. It was the beginning of a wave of unprecedented political crimes, which continued to hit state officials, intellectuals and innocent citizens,” he wrote on Wednesday evening, on Facebook, Ionel Bogdan.

The deputy says that the memory of the victims must remain alive, but also that history must not repeat itself.

That is why the PNL parliamentarians request that December 29 be declared the National Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Legionary Movement.

“It is a painful page from our past, but one that we have the duty to evoke with responsibility. So that history does not repeat itself. So that the memory of the victims remains alive. That is why, together with Gabriel Andronache and our colleagues from the PNL parliamentary groups, we submitted a legislative initiative for December 29 to become the National Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Legionary Movement. It is a moral duty. For memory. For truth. For democracy,” said deputy Ionel Bogdan.
