Farmers from the Alliance for Agriculture and Cooperation (AAC) are asking the President of Romania not to promulgate the law that will allow tax increases starting next year, as this will represent the end of the road for many Romanian agricultural businesses, family farms and small processing plants.

“The Alliance for Agriculture and Cooperation, formed by the Pro Agro National Federation, the League of Associations of Agricultural Producers from Romania – LAPAR, the Union of the National Branch of Cooperatives in the Vegetable Sector – UNCSV and the Farmers' Force Association – AFF, noted with concern the continuation of the legislative process for increasing taxes starting next year. Following yesterday's decision, Wednesday – December 10, of the Constitutional Court of Romania, the only hope of Romanian farmers now lies with the President of Romania, Mr. Nicusor Dan. On behalf of the represented farmers, AAC appeals to the head of state not to promulgate the tax law this year, offering agriculture, but also the entire Romanian society, a breath of oxygen after a wave of measures that, in the last half year, brought price increases that destabilized everyone's life. We appeal to the President of Romania to make use of his right to request the re-examination of the act adopted by the Parliament. This approach will provide the necessary time for the elaboration of a text that takes into account the economic realities and especially the possibility of farmers and not only to support all the proposed increases”, it is stated in a press release of AAC, writes Agerpres.

According to the cited source, without an impact study on the explosion of taxes and taxation in the agricultural sector, by introducing, overnight, new taxes, such as those for solariums, grain storages or mushrooming, the new legislation voted by the Parliamentarians on November 18 will represent the end of the road for many Romanian agricultural businesses, for family farms and small processing factories.

“Romanian agriculture ends a complicated year, in which farmers have already endured the introduction of the tax on the pole, the increase in labor taxes, but also a severe drought that left producers in many counties without production of the basic crops – corn, sunflower, soy. In this context, the increase in taxes comes to burden the Romanian producer even more, strangling the sector in its entirety. We remind the state decision-makers at any level that Romanian farmers represent the basis of the economy, that without them, economic stability, but especially national food security, are at risk. With a war on the border and an uncertain future regarding the new European policy to support agriculture, we consider that the successive blows given to this strategic sector represent an act of irresponsibility, an attack on the national agri-food security”support the representatives of the farmers.
