In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, two moose were caught fighting on the horns of two moose in a camera trap (video)

In the Talsko-Garevsky nature reserve of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, two elk were caught on a camera trap and started a battle, the directorate for specially protected natural areas said.

A camera trap in the reserve captured two male moose. The animals butted each other with their horns.

“In December, the rutting period for elk is already over. The reason for the battle may be to defend one’s territory, but this rarely happens outside the mating season – usually moose are quite peaceful and prefer a solitary lifestyle. However, in the background you can see a salt lick, over which, most likely, the males got into a fight,” the directorate said.

The directorate also suggested that in this way the moose could be trying to get rid of old antlers. After all, December is the period when the animal’s body reacts to the reduction in daylight hours and to the decrease in the level of testosterone in the blood associated with the end of the rut, which is why the bone tissue of the horns is destroyed. Moose are getting ready to shed their old antlers and start growing new ones.
