Doctors at the Krasnoyarsk Oncology Center have developed a breast cancer screening model for women under 40 years of age. Now it is in this age group that the disease ranks first among the causes of death from cancer. Valeria Komissarova, head of the department of screening programs and prevention of malignant neoplasms at the regional cancer clinic, spoke about this in her report at a meeting of the Russian Society of Oncology and Mammology:

“The peak incidence of breast cancer occurs at the age of 60-64 years, but in women under the age of 40 this disease ranks first in the structure of morbidity and mortality from malignant neoplasms. Over the past 10 years, the incidence in this age category has increased by almost 60%. Screening programs using mammography in women over 40 years of age have significantly reduced the proportion of advanced cases. We are convinced that it is also possible to reduce this rate among young women with the help of timely screening.”
Doctors believe that performing mammography on all young women is not advisable, so as not to increase the radiation exposure to patients who are not at risk. So they developed a risk-based model.
“By analyzing family history, reproductive status, lifestyle and other risk factors, we created a model that allows us to determine which young women need to be included in the screening program earlier due to increased risk. Such patients will be recommended to undergo mammography, based on the results of which the issue of further diagnostics will be decided,” explained Valeria Alekseevna.
It is noted that the new screening model in the future can be used in widespread medical practice for more accurate and efficient routing of patients.
