The explosion took place on the university premises, in a hangar rented to external companies. According to preliminary information, the cause of the explosion was decompression of the test stand, which damaged the turbine in the testing equipment. “Fragments of the wheel penetrated protective structures, causing injuries,” university representatives say in a statement published on their website.

As a result of the incident, a man who was the director of the company responsible for the tests conducted at the research center died. His 8-year-old daughter also died. “She stayed at the facility in violation of safety regulations,” reports the university's press office, adding that an investigation is underway to explain why the child was at the research site.
The hangar is located next to the aviation department. The case is being investigated by the Russian Investigative Committee
Three other company employees were also injured in the explosion. Two were taken to hospital in a serious condition, the third did not require hospitalization.
According to Russian media, the hangar where the explosion occurred is located near the building of the aviation and astronautics department. Since 2009, the university has been among 12 Russian centers that have received the status of “national research universities”. The curriculum focuses on aircraft engine construction, gas turbine technology, oil, gas and mineral extraction and processing, and nanotechnologies.
The investigation into the explosion is being conducted by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, reports RBK.
