We have to postpone CBAM in order to protect the domestic market from imports – metallurgists
If the European CBAM tariff becomes operational in Ukraine in January 2026, Ukrainian metallurgy will lose competitiveness, and the domestic market will be flooded with Turkish imports. This was stated by the operational director of Metinvest Oleksandr Myronenko at the forum of industrialists from Forbes Ukraine.
“SVAM will make us less competitive. That is why we are working together with the government to postpone its introduction for Ukraine. This would make it possible to resume production, invest and modernize enterprises after the war,” he says.
The influx of Turkish steel will be especially dangerous for Ukraine – it threatens domestic manufacturers and jobs.
According to the estimates of the Federation of Employers, in the event of CBAM for Ukraine, the drop in GDP will amount to $8.7 billion by 2026 and $11.3 billion in 2034. Budgetary and social funds may lack up to $3.6 billion annually.
