“It is impossible to achieve peace without Europe.” The Pope commented on the negotiations on Ukraine

The Pontiff noted the importance of Europe's role in the peace process, adding that trying to reach an agreement without involving Europe is unrealistic. He emphasized that the war is taking place on the European continent, so Europe must be part of the security guarantees, and he also sees significant potential for uniting European countries in finding common solutions.

Commenting on the meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at Villa Barberini in Castel Gandolfo, the Pope refused to evaluate the “peace plan” of the administration of US President Donald Trump to end the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine.

But he noted that some aspects of the plan could have a significant impact on the decades-long alliance between Europe and the United States. In addition, the pontiff emphasized that recent statements regarding Europe, particularly in interviews, in his opinion, are aimed at undermining what “should be a very important alliance today and in the future.”

Regarding the return of abducted children from Ukraine, Leo XIV confirmed that he discussed this issue with Zelensky, and noted that the Holy See continues to privately make efforts to return children to their families. The pontiff also confirmed the Vatican's readiness to provide space for negotiations and dialogue.

In response to President Zelensky's invitation to visit Ukraine, he replied that he hoped that this would happen someday, but said that a realistic approach must be maintained in such matters.
