The US has given Ukraine a deadline of several days to respond to the latest version of the “peace deal” discussed with Kiev and Moscow, the Financial Times reported, citing sources, according to Ukrainska Pravda. President Zelenskiy, who also talked about holding possible elections, said the US side had informed Kiev that post-war security guarantees must be “realistic”.
FT sources say Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has told European leaders he was urged to make a quick decision on the peace deal during a difficult conversation with US President Donald Trump's envoys on Sunday.
The British publication noted that the Ukrainian leader has several “days” at his disposal to give an answer regarding the proposed “peace agreement”.
According to the sources, Zelensky told the Americans that he needed time to consult with Ukraine's European allies about the deal.
Trump hopes to finalize the deal “by Christmas,” a source familiar with the timetable offered to Kiev told the FT.
Ukraine, “stuck” between unacceptable demands and an administration “it cannot refuse”
A Western official said the Ukrainian side is “stuck between territorial claims it cannot accept and an American side it cannot refuse.”
President Zelensky said on Tuesday that the US had conveyed to Ukraine that security guarantees for the Russian-invaded country must be “realistic” for the deal to be supported by the US side, Reuters reports.
He told reporters that Ukraine was ready for a truce with Russia in the energy sector if Moscow agreed, and that he would do everything possible to hold a high-level meeting with the US in the next two weeks on the peace deal. Zelenski noted that this week he expects to hold several meetings with the Europeans and the Americans at the level of security advisors.
What he said about the organization of elections
Also on Tuesday, Ukraine's president said he was ready for elections, but asked his European and American partners to help ensure the security of an eventual vote.
If security is guaranteed, elections could be held in the next 60-90 days, President Zelenski added, noting that he would ask parliament to prepare the necessary legislation to allow elections to be held during martial law.
In an interview with Politico on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said that, in his opinion, “it's time” to hold elections in Ukraine.
Ukrainian leaders “talk about democracy, but it is reaching a point where it is no longer a democracy (…). The Ukrainian people should have this freedom to make this choice”, insisted the head of the White House, quoted by AFP. “I don't know who would win,” Trump added.
