The president of PKP Intercity, Janusz Malinowski, announced last week that the company will buy 50 used wagons from the German carrier Deutsche Bahn. In response to PAP's questions, the PKP Intercity press office said that the wagons will be delivered to the Polish carrier in the first quarter of 2026 and will be put into operation “quickly”.

Intercity noted that all carriages will be air-conditioned and will be able to move at a maximum speed of 200 km/h. “The wagons will undergo necessary repairs, which will enable them to be put into operation at PKP Intercity as soon as possible.. This will be implemented by PKP Intercity Remtrak. PKP Intercity will announce the routes to which they will be directed closer to the date of putting the wagons into service,” the company said.

According to PKP Intercity, the order for additional wagons is primarily due to the increase in the number of passengers and a larger number of trains launched during the year. “Comparison of the timetable for the 2025/2026 and 2022/2023 seasons of PKP Intercity will launch in December by 28%. more trains for passengers. To be able to provide a sufficient number of seats on trains, it is necessary to have rolling stock that will make this possible. Moreover, two unresolved tenders for double-decker rolling stock (July 2023, March 2024) cause a measurable gap in the availability of rolling stock in the coming years,” the company said.

The carrier emphasized that it is intensifying repairs of its rolling stock, which is why there are currently approximately twice as many wagons in repair plants than in previous years. In addition, a tender for the lease of used wagons was launched.

“We offer purchases of used wagons from foreign markets, and we are also implementing a huge investment program in the Polish industry – over PLN 16.5 billion. (…) All this to maintain the possibility of implementing a transport offer that meets the rapidly growing needs of passengers and to secure the position of PKP Intercity in the years 2026–2032, so as to avoid a decline in market share,” the carrier said.

PKP Intercity is the largest interregional railway operator that provides communication between large cities and popular tourist centers in the country, as well as enabling travel around Europe. Last year, PKP Intercity trains carried 78.5 million passengers. The company offers travel in four categories of trains. Your Railway Lines (TLK) and InterCity (IC) are economic connections, while Express InterCity (EIC) and Express InterCity Premium (EIP) operated by Pendolino vehicles are express connections. (PAP)
