Folk calendar
Katerina Sannitsa
On this day, the memory of the Christian martyr Catherine of Alexandria, who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries, is celebrated.
In Rus', from this day on, noisy sleigh festivities began. The first to go on the trip were the newlyweds who got married last fall. It is noteworthy that at this holiday the young woman showed herself to people for the first time after the wedding. Behind the newlyweds' sleigh, painted with paints and decorated with ribbons, was a whole cortege of all relatives and friends. Returning from the festivities, they held a feast, and small children who were not invited to it were sent gifts and sleighs as gifts.
Those who could not afford to ride on painted sleighs took sleds or simple planks and went downhill, usually from steep river banks directly onto the ice. And here the newlyweds were the center of attention. When leaving the house, they had to walk on a sheepskin coat with the fur turned outward to protect themselves from the evil eye.
Russian people considered Saint Catherine (Catherine) the patroness of marriage and brides, as well as a helper of pregnant women and women in labor. On the night of Katerina, girls dreaming of marriage told fortunes about the grooms – for example, they broke off an apple tree branch and put it under the pillow so that the betrothed would appear. If the girl already had a guy in mind, she would slowly take some thing from him, and then roll the loaf of bread around it in circles, believing that this ritual would force the young man to walk in circles around her house.
