Moldova asked Romania for “emergency aid” after Russian bombing targeted energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine

Moldelectrica, the operator of the electricity transmission system in the Republic of Moldova, announced on Saturday that following the Russian attacks on the electrical infrastructure in the Odesa region, part of southern Ukraine was left without power, and the damage caused also affected energy flows in the region. As a result of these strikes, an important energy group in Ukraine was disconnected, and the interconnection lines reached close to their maximum limit. In order to prevent overloads in the national system, Moldelectrica has preventively requested emergency power from Romania, informs News.ro.
“Following the attacks on the energy system of Ukraine in the region related to the Republic of Moldova, an important energy group was disconnected, and the interconnection lines are loaded close to the limit. Following the exceedance of the planned flow, Moldelectrica requested preventive emergency aid from Romania for the next few hours. This will maintain the safe operation of the electric power system and prevent possible overloads.
At the same time, we urge the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to consume electricity rationally, especially during peak hours, to reduce the risk of overload and possible disconnections.
We are constantly monitoring the developments and will return with additional information when the situation requires it for the next few hours”, stated the operator from the Republic of Moldova.

The Emergency Service reported fires in a warehouse in Novi Petrivtsi and in a house in Bucea. Explosions were also reported in several regions of the country, including Lvov, Chernihiv, Poltava, Lutsk, Odesa, Zaporozhye, Dnipropetrovsk, Volyn, Mikolaiv and Bila Terkva. Air alerts were activated nationwide after MiG-34K aircraft, capable of launching Kinzhal missiles, were involved in the attacks.
In Dnipropetrovsk, Governor Vladislav Haivanenko announced fires caused by strikes on homes in Pavlohrad and infrastructure in Krivoi Rog. In Nikopol, an 11-year-old boy was injured. In Lutsk, the mayor Ihor Polisciuk informed that several food warehouses were engulfed in flames.
Poland's Air Force has raised fighter jets to protect the national airspace, in the context of prolonged Russian attacks on western Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Russia is striking peaceful cities on Saint Nicholas Day, reiterating the need for additional sanctions and the strengthening of anti-aircraft systems.
