US President Donald Trump launched a violent tirade against Somalia on Tuesday, saying that immigrants from the African country should not be welcomed into the United States, writes AFP.
His considerations came on the side of the scandal in the state of Minnesota where, according to local justice, more than a billion dollars were diverted for non-existent social services, by means of false invoices issued by Americans of Somali origin.
In Somalia, “they have nothing, they're just killing each other,” Trump said during a cabinet meeting. “Their country is worthless for no reason. It's a broken country and we don't want them here,” Trump added.
“We're at a crossroads,” Trump said, adding that the United States would make “a bad choice if we continue to get waste into our country.”
Pointing out that Somali-Americans “don't contribute anything,” he took aim at Ilhan Omer, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives who is originally from Somalia and highly critical of the Republican administration.
“Ilhan Omer is trash. Her friends are trash. Let them go back where they came from and solve their problems,” Donald Trump said.
The American president announced last week his intention to permanently stop immigration from all third world countries after the attack by an Afghan suspect on two members of the National Guard, which took place in Washington.
In June, the US government imposed entry bans or visa restrictions on citizens of 19 countries, including Somalia.
A country in the Horn of Africa, where 70% of the population lives, according to the UN, in “multidimensional poverty”, Somalia went through a civil war in the 90s that led to the collapse of state institutions.
