The new penal code also provides for very high penalties for embezzlement and corruptionincluding life imprisonment if the amount involved is more than $9 million. Promoting and practicing homosexuality will also be punished.
The death penalty was abolished in Burkina Faso in 2018.during the presidency of Roch Marc Christian Kabore. However, since January 2022, the country has been ruled by a military junta led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who took power in a coup d'etat, overthrowing Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Since then Traore pursues an anti-Western policy and distanced the country from its former colonial overlord, France, whose troops he expelled from his country.
