It's prom time. Freshmen from all high schools, together with their older colleagues, participate in the famous parties organized, traditionally, to help the newcomers meet the “veterans” of the high schools and integrate more easily into the school. The artists who take the stage are, most of the time, trappers or singers, and the lyrics are often shocking – about drugs, sex, violence. The School Inspectorate says that proms do not belong to high schools and that educational institutions are not responsible for what happens there, while the Ministry of Education claims exactly the opposite, writes everythingdespremame.ro.

If you are the parent of a freshman preparing for the party and imagine that the Prom in 2025 still has anything to do with the one “from your time”, you are sorely mistaken. Times have changed, teenagers now live in a completely different world than their parents grew up in, and their pastimes are obviously different.

To document this article, tutuldespremame.ro journalists spoke with students, parents, teachers and a representative of the Bucharest School Inspectorate. They also requested explanations from the Ministry of Education. The article contains vulgar words, and the editors chose to include some of them in the text, in order to realize the magnitude of the situation.

  1. The Prom, in most cases, is no longer organized by the high school, but by event companies, and access is free for anyone who buys a ticket, with or without connection to the school, student or adult. There are not a few cases reported in the media in recent years in which, at the ball, the police found drugs and minors consuming alcohol. Professional companies involve the students in the organization, help them prepare for the Miss and Mister contests, provide them with a night club and artists to sing at the party. Following several scandals, companies began to hide the fact that the events are organized for high schools and use various tricks to avoid mentioning the explicit names of the schools in the promotion.
  2. The artists who take the stage are, most of the time, trappers or manale singers and they sing about drugs, sex, violence. Some lyrics abound in explicit sexual expressions, insults and images that reduce women to a commodity that can be bought, exchanged, thrown away. Albert NBN, AdelinMM, Rava, Nouăunșpe, Abi are just a few of the most requested trappers at such events. Here, for example, is what Adelin MM sings: ”(…)She was talkative until I put a cover on her…I see her arranged, like powder on her nose/ If I look more closely, I see traces of cox/ She's also a model, she's getting a big push/ What feelings, do you have? That there's no point/ Pick up your underpants“.
  3. Students are not supervised by teachers or high school representatives. Minors attend the prom with the written consent of their parents, who assume everything that might happen there.

Organizers and the School Inspectorate: the responsibility of parents. Ministry of Education: teachers and schools

According to the regulations of the organizing companies, parents are responsible for what happens at the ball. Access to the event is allowed for children based on an agreement in which the parent assumes “any incident and injury that the minor may suffer due to my lack of adequate supervision”.

The responses of the School Inspectorate of the Municipality of Bucharest (ISMB) and the Ministry of Education are contradictory: the inspectorate says that proms do not belong to high schools and that educational institutions are not responsible for what happens there, and the Ministry of Education claims exactly the opposite.

“The state pre-university education units in Bucharest do not organize the New Year's Ball and do not include such events in the plan of school or extracurricular activities. Any such events are private initiatives, carried out outside the institutional framework. The participation of students in such events is optional and takes place solely under the responsibility of parents/guardians. Students do not participate on behalf of the education unit, because these activities are not organized, approved or coordinated by the school institution”, states Camelia Lepădat, ISMB spokesperson.

For the Ministry of Education, however, freshmen balls are extracurricular activities, which school principals must manage by signing contracts with the organizing companies and appointing a responsible teaching staff.
