Mogherini heads the Graduate School at the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium). She, as well as one of the heads of the university and former Secretary General of the European External Action Service Stefano Sannino, were detained the day before on suspicion of fraud with EU grants for the program for training young diplomats in 2021–2022.
The charges relate to fraud and corruption in the field of public procurement, conflict of interest and violation of professional secrets, law enforcement officers noted. The defendants have been officially notified of the charges against them.
All three were released late in the evening. Mogherini's lawyer told Le Soir that her client was released “without conditions” and that the interrogation “was long and went very well.”
