The South Korean company Samsung on Tuesday presented its first foldable phone in three, at a price inaccessible to the average consumer, notes France Presse.
The Galaxy Z TriFold will go on sale on December 12 in South Korea and will cost twice as much as the new iPhone 17 in this country, namely 2,100 euros.
This novelty for Samsung is not a world first: last year, Huawei beat its competitors with a phone sold at a similar price.
Ultra-slim, the Galaxy Z TriFold opens to reveal a 10-inch (25.4 cm) screen, offering “increased possibilities to create and work,” the South Korean tech giant said.
It is “not intended for mass sale”, admitted the South Korean giant.
Alex Lim, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics, said it was a “special edition”. Growing in the competitive smartphone market is difficult, which prompts manufacturers to find new ways to differentiate themselves from other companies.
Available only in black, the new Samsung device weighs 309 grams and is less than 0.5 cm thick at its thinnest point.
The phone integrates generative artificial intelligence (AI) features that can be used in real-time via screen or camera sharing.
The launch comes at a time when Apple is about to overtake Samsung. The US company's smartphone shipments are expected to reach a 19.4% global market share in 2025, while Samsung would account for 18.7% of the market, according to research firm Counterpoint. Apple would thus dethrone its rival for the first time.
