Ilie Bolojan, call for unity in Parliament: “Our enemies today are division, mistrust and lack of responsibility”

In a solemn session of the Parliament dedicated to the National Day, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan sent a call for unity, political responsibility and consolidation of democracy, evoking the sacrifices of the forerunners who made Greater Romania possible.

In the beginning of his speech delivered in front of parliamentarians, representatives of state institutions and official guests, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan emphasized that modern Romania was built by “political will, civic engagement, struggle and sacrifice”.

“In 1918 we had a whole generation of statesmen and politicians who understood that in front of them was a historic chance that could not be missed”said Bolojan, recalling the efforts made immediately after the First World War for the formation of Greater Romania.

The Prime Minister mentioned those he appointed “fathers of the nation”: “Iuliu Maniu, Iancu Flondor, Pantelimon Halipa, Gheorghe Pop de Băsești, Vasile Goldiș, Ionel Brătianu, Bishop Iuliu Hossu, together with King Ferdinand and Queen Maria“.

These are the people thanks to whom we can celebrate a Greater Romania today“, he stated, recalling that many of them ended up in communist prisons.

“We had to right what was wrong”

Ilie Bolojan linked the past to the current challenges, emphasizing the responsibility of today's generation to strengthen the state and ensure the country's development.

Today we have our share of responsibility: to build a prosperous nation”the prime minister pointed out, noting that tough but inevitable measures were necessary in recent years: “We had to put the country's finances in order and correct what was wrong. Some measures were not popular. Some have been painful and I know that. But they were all necessary“.

Call for political responsibility and unity

The prime minister warned of the risks generated by internal tensions and political populism. “Our enemies today are division, mistrust and irresponsibility“, he said, adding that Romania needs “predictability, not permanent confrontation, not instigation, not chaos“.

He reminded that the fundamental values of the Romanian state must be the benchmarks in any political decision: “Democracy, freedom, law and respect for every citizen“.

Bolojan reaffirmed Romania's western orientation: “Belonging to the Western world and its values is part of our nation's DNA”.

“Romania has people who build a better country”

The Prime Minister concluded with an optimistic but firm message:When we meet next year, I want each of us to be able to say that we have done our duty“.

He emphasized his trust in the Romanian people: “The Romania I know has bold, inventive and innovative people, people who, every day, where they are, build a better country“.

The speech ended with the traditional greeting: “Happy birthday, Romania! Happy birthday to all Romanians! May God protect our country!”

Also today, the Government decided not to approve any of the 42 amendments submitted by the parliamentarians to the draft law on the reform of magistrates' pensions. The executive has adopted the initial form of the project and is due to commit to Parliament on Tuesday afternoon, December 2.
