Recently, Antonio Dumitru (19 years old), the boxer who was the main character of an episode of the GSP.ro series “Pure Passion”, successfully debuted in another sport, kempo.
Alex Scarlat, his boxing coach, explained that “because there were no boxing competitions during this period, Antonio wanted to try kempo, do something, fight. He wasn't afraid because he came from a contact sport anyway.
And for about two weeks he trained in boxing and kempo in parallel. He had to learn the rules, kick some more. And at the end of November he fought at the National Kempo Championship. He entered the hardest test, where he fought according to K1 rules”.
He only lost to the kempo world champion
In the competition that took place at the “Apollo” hall, Antonio fought in the 70 kg category and managed to get the bronze medal. Brawling, explosive guy on the arms, who goes into the fight without planning, the boxer managed to provide a big surprise.
He defeated the national kempo champion, Lorenzo Vasilescu. And he lost in the semi-finals, but in front of the world champion Vlad Andrei Popa, winning the bronze medal.
“It was interesting, but I stick to my sport, boxing”
For Antonio Dumitru, the National Boxing Championships will take place in Târgu Mureș between December 10-16. It will be the first time he will participate in the competition reserved for seniors.
He is the national youth champion, a title he won a year ago, when out of the 4 matches, in three, including the final, he defeated his opponents by KO.
In a dialogue with GSP.ro, Antonio Dumitru said that “I wasn't afraid, even though I didn't know kempo and I don't know how to kick. I wanted to fight, but also to earn some money myself. And I managed.
I got kicked again, but I coped. They would hit me and leave, because they couldn't really face me in arm wrestling. It was an interesting experience, but I stick to my sport, boxing. And now, at the “Nationals”, especially since it's the first time I'm participating in the seniors, I'm going to give everything I can to get the best possible result“.
