Nicola Pietrangeli died at the age of 93
Nicola Pietrangeli was a legendary Italian tennis player and one of the most prominent European athletes of his generation.
Born in Tunisia to a family of Italian descent, he became a leading figure in world tennis in the 1950s and 1960s thanks to his exceptional technique and elegance on court.
He achieved his greatest successes at Roland Garros, where he won the titles in 1959 and 1960, reaching two other finals.
He was known for his unusually strong lapel, stamina and tactical maturity, which earned him over a hundred appearances for Italy in the Davis Cup, where he still holds the record for wins.
After his playing career, he remained active as national team captain and sports official, contributing to the development of Italian and European tennis. He is considered one of the greatest players of the pre-Open era.
