The Geographical Dictation was held in Norilsk for the 10th time. The Dictation was traditionally organized by the Russian Geographical Society (RGS).
For the first time, an international educational campaign was held in Russia in 2015, Norilsk joined it a year later – in 2016. Then the Dictation was written in the Museum, and this year over a dozen sites were prepared for the townspeople in all districts, including in the swimming pool, where divers answered questions and filled out forms under water.
At the initiative of the chairman of the scientific commission of the Norilsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society, deputy of the City Council Natalya Karmanovskaya, one of the sites became the hall where the local parliament holds its meetings.
“In Norilsk, the Geographical Dictation appeared thanks to everyone’s favorite scientist, one of the founders of the Putoransky Nature Reserve, Vladimir Larin, who in the last years of his life worked at the city Museum. Since then, every year we have tried to diversify the venues and attract citizens to this useful and interesting event. This time the Dictation is dedicated to three anniversary dates: the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Geographical Society and the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the development of the Northern Sea Route,” noted Natalya Karmanovskaya.
Speaker of the local parliament Alexander Pestryakov, who is also a member of the Norilsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society, also regularly takes part in various dictations:
“My favorite is the Victory Dictation, and I decided to take part in Geographical to learn something new for myself, because our country is famous for many geographical discoveries. In general, such educational events are undoubtedly useful for each of us, because in search of the right answers we begin to study a topic in more detail and expand our knowledge base,” he shared.
The Dictation itself consisted of 40 questions of various directions, in which geography was closely intertwined with historical events, biology, botany and other disciplines – even experienced participants had to rack their brains over some of the formulations.
“The questions were very diverse, many of them required additional knowledge, not only from the field of geography. Personally, I found all the questions interesting, especially about Mount Elbrus. I’ll wait for the results of the dictation,” said Norilsk City Council member Alexey Makarov.
All participants will be able to find out their result after December 21 using the unique QR code of their form on the official website of the Geographical Dictation.
Let us add that this year the Dictation was written on 10,339 sites around the world. It was also possible to answer questions online.
