Folk calendar

Plato and Roman Winter Guides

On this day, the memory of the martyrs Plato and Roman, who suffered for their faith at the beginning of the 4th century, is celebrated.

In Rus', Plato and Roman were called winter indicators because they used their day to judge what the coming winter would be like. “Plato and Roman seem like winter to us,” people said. If there was a change in weather during the day, this meant that there would be a turning point during the winter. At the same time, they watched the weather all day: in the morning they judged the beginning of winter, in the afternoon – about the middle, in the evening – about the end.

If suddenly a live mosquito was found in the house of Plato and Roman, this meant that a thaw would soon come. Warmth was also foreshadowed by a crow walking along the road. On this day they looked at the sky: if a circle appeared around the month, they expected severe frost.
