The biggest problems were reported in the localities of Panagia and Potamia, according to the publication ProtoThema.gr.
The roads gave way under the pressure of the floods, cars were dragged by the water, and the ground floors of several houses were flooded. In Potamia, the rapid accumulation of water during the night led to the subsidence of the road and the tearing out of some road segments.
The local press notes that the torrent “swept away debris, rocks and even parked cars.” A driver was surprised by the flood in the car, but was quickly rescued. For a short time, traffic on the main arteries was stopped for safety reasons.
The effects of the storm were also felt in the Athens region. Firefighters announced that they received about 30 calls for the removal of fallen trees in the northern areas of the capital. In total, 127 requests were registered in Attica between Friday and Saturday, including water evacuations and fallen trees, according to efsyn.gr.
The Ministry of Civil Protection has instituted a code red alert for several regions, including the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, the Peloponnese, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as the northern and southern Aegean Sea.
The rainfall could continue in the coming hours, say the Thassos authorities.
