Two National Guard soldiers were shot in Washington DC, near the White House / Conflicting information on their condition / A suspect arrested / What Trump decided

Two members of the United States National Guard were shot on Wednesday in Washington DC, the US capital, not far from the White House. The two soldiers are in critical condition, the FBI director said, after their deaths were previously reported. A suspect, also wounded, was arrested in connection with this armed attack, the Police announced.

The two National Guardsmen who were shot are hospitalized in “critical condition,” FBI Director Kash Patel said at a news conference.

“What we do know (…) is that the gunfire was aimed. It appears that an individual directly aimed at these National Guard soldiers. This individual has been arrested,” Muriel Bowser, the Democratic mayor of Washington DC, said in the same press conference.

The governor of the state of West Virginia, where the two victims are from, had previously told X that the two soldiers had died of their injuries, before quickly backtracking and citing “conflicting information” about their health.

Trump calls for 500 additional troops to be sent to Washington

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announces that President Trump has requested the deployment of 500 additional troops to Washington DC following the armed attack on National Guard members in the city.

“This incident took place just steps from the White House and will not go unnoticed, which is why President Trump has asked me — and I will ask the Secretary of the Army and the National Guard — to send 500 additional National Guard troops to Washington, DC,” Hegseth said.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced in a post on X that both soldiers who were shot died at the hospital from their injuries. But just minutes after that announcement, the governor came back with a new message on X saying that there is currently more conflicting information about the condition of the two National Guard members and he will provide additional information as soon as he has more information.

“These brave residents of West Virginia lost their lives in the service of their country,” the governor of this state, where the two members of the National Guard came from, initially wrote on the X platform. The White House redistributed the governor's post.

President Donald Trump reports in a post on Truth Social that the two soldiers who were shot are in critical condition at the hospital.

And the attacker was seriously injured, says Trump, who says he will “pay a big price” for what he did.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen — both of whom are now in critical condition in two different hospitals — is also seriously injured, but regardless, he will pay a very high price. God bless our National Guard and all of our military and law enforcement. They are truly wonderful people. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the President, stand with you!”, is the message posted by Donald Trump shortly after the incident.
