Firefighters are still battling flames at a Hong Kong apartment complex that broke out midday Wednesday and are still searching for residents missing in the city's worst fire in decades. On Thursday morning, they managed to rescue an elderly man from one of the burning buildings, reports CNN.
“We are doing our best and will not give up any chance to save lives,” Wong Ka Wing, deputy director of Fire Services, told a press conference Thursday afternoon.
This morning, firefighters “successfully rescued an elderly man from the lobby of the 31st floor of the affected building,” he said, adding that the man was taken to hospital.
Wong said firefighters continue to face difficult conditions inside the blocks due to high temperatures and collapsed bamboo scaffolding and are working level by level.
“It's very difficult for us,” Wong said.
The fire that engulfed several high-rise buildings in a Hong Kong apartment complex has left at least 55 dead.
The complex was under renovation and surrounded by bamboo scaffolding and safety nets. Three men who worked for a construction company were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the fire. The police accused the three of “gross negligence”.
