Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan welcomed the European Commission's decision to keep the excessive deficit procedure suspended in the case of Romania, saying that “it is good news and a confirmation that the direction we went in was the right one”.

The Prime Minister says that the signal sent by the European Commission on Tuesday is a “very important one” and “confirms that the measures taken by the Government in recent months were correct and have started to produce results”.

“The European Commissioner for the Economy, Valdis Dombrovskis, conveyed today that, thanks to the fiscal measures adopted this summer, the situation in Romania has improved, and the Commission will not now propose the suspension of European funds”, stated Ilie Bolojan, on Tuesday, in the post on Facebook.

According to the prime minister, the budget deficit “starts to decrease and the trend is maintained in the coming years”, and “expenditure growth is kept under control and remains close to the recommended ceiling”.

“We continue the investments financed by European funds”, he added.

“We must continue on this path”

Ilie Bolojan thanked Valdis Dombrovskis “for the constant dialogue and for the support shown to Romania in this difficult process”.

“It's good news and a confirmation that the direction we went in was the right one. In the last months we made difficult but necessary decisions. Today we see the first results: Romania is regaining its credibility. At the same time, the Commission's message is clear: we must continue on this path,” added the prime minister.

He explained that “this means carrying forward the planned measures, improving revenue collection, reducing expenditure and putting order in the budget first”.

“We will continue to work seriously, with responsibility and with respect for public money”, concluded Ilie Bolojan.

The European Commission has decided that the excessive deficit procedure (EDP) applied to Romania since April 2020 is kept in a state of suspension, according to the statement sent on Tuesday by the Ministry of Finance, which in turn claimed that Brussels' position “validates the progress” of our country. The community executive “does not propose additional steps in the macroeconomic conditionality procedure and will not propose the suspension of European funds at this stage”, the ministry also declared.
