Russians were warned about possible car breakdowns due to gasoline diluted with alcohol

November 26 12:05

Russian motorists may experience car breakdowns due to the fact that up to 10% ethyl alcohol is allowed to be added to gasoline. This was reported by VSE42.RU with reference to FAR lawyer Vladlen Kopwillem and oil and gas industry expert Vladimir Bobylev.

Vladlen Copville I recalled that the State Duma decided to zero out the excise tax on denatured ethanol used in the production of AI-92 gasoline. Refineries are now allowed to increase the ethanol content of gasoline to 10%. According to legislators, this will help increase fuel production for the domestic market and reduce the deficit.

Vladimir Bobylev noted that the addition of ethyl alcohol to fuel is used in many European countries.

“This is a completely normal story. There is no global problem in this. And its use does not negatively affect the car engine – today, many European manufacturers indicate in the vehicle passport the permitted amount of biofuel added to conventional fuel. As a rule, it ranges from 15 to 20%,” the expert notes.

But such fuel is well accepted only withmodern injection engines. And carburetor engines may experience increased fuel consumption, a drop in power and accelerated wear of parts. Biofuel also does not tolerate frost well. At low temperatures it can delaminate, forming a paraffin film on the surface.

Vladlen Kopvilem noted that in this case, Russian cars from AvtoVAZ, UAZ and GAZ may suffer. Nowadays their engines are set to 5% alcohol in gasoline and diluted fuel can cause damage. The problem can be solved by retuning, so manufacturers will either have to launch massive recall companies, or they will start rebuilding the engines in service centers or garages with unclear results. But the problem is that the breakdown due to the new gasoline will still have to be proven.
