Ski insurance – this is what you need to pay attention to

Many Poles go skiing to foreign resorts, e.g. Italy and Austria, but not everyone remembers that an accident in such a place means much higher costs than in the country. The popular EHIC on the slopes will not help if we have a ski pass that we do not use, or if we need to call mountain rescuers. Insurance abroad is necessary, especially if we want to practice winter sports. Check out the list of ski policies and see what insurers offer to their clients.

A study by the Polish Tourist Organization shows that in the 2024/2025 season, approximately 27% of respondents planned winter recreational trips abroad, of which as many as 14% indicated practicing winter sports as the reason. To say that such a holiday is expensive would be a huge understatement: resorts such as the Italian Livigno not only cost accommodation in euros, but also ski passes, which, according to the Italian National Association of Users of Public Services (Assoutenti), cost EUR 72 per day this year (an increase of over 8%). If a tourist has an accident on the slope, he will generally have to pay not only for the treatment, but also the costs of the previously purchased ski pass. You can avoid this by purchasing insurance, but it's the details that matter.
Does a ski trip need to be insured?
Private trips for tourist purposes do not have to be insuredhowever, if the trip is organized by a travel agency, this additional protection will usually appear as part of the package. If you are staying abroad for a longer period of time, it is worth getting a European Health Insurance Card, which will allow you to receive basic medical assistance, e.g. in the event of illness or injury. Unfortunately, the document has its limitations – although its issuance is free of charge, the scope of the EHIC does not cover, for example, rescue, transport to the country, luggage protection or benefits in the event of health damage. During foreign trips, especially winter trips and those related to sports, such elements will be provided by a tourist insurance policy, provided that its scope is selected appropriately.

Ski insurance – this is something you need to take into account
When deciding to purchase travel insurance that will be helpful during a skiing or snowboarding trip abroad, we should focus on the possible high insurance sums. It is not worth saving in order to pay the lowest possible premium, because in the event of an accident, the costs of medical assistance may exceed the insurer's liability limit, and we will have to cover the rest of the expenses. Here are the most important elements to pay attention to:
- Treatment costs – this is a basic element of a ski tourist insurance policy; the higher the amount we choose, the greater the certainty that in the event of an accident we will receive the help we need without additional costs. This limit usually also includes assistance services, rescue services and transport of the insured person to the country.
- NNW – protection in the event of an accident consisting in the payment of a one-time benefit in the event of the insured person's death or serious health impairment;
- OC – civil liability insurance covers damage caused unintentionally, e.g. damage to someone's sports equipment or a collision with another tourist while skiing;
- Luggage – the policy will cover the costs of damage and/or theft of suitcases, travel bags and sometimes also sports equipment.
If we suffer from chronic diseases, e.g. diabetes or hypertension, we must take into account the risk of health deterioration during the trip. As a rule, it is included in the costs of treatment, but some insurers may require the purchase of an additional clause, so it is worth checking whether the selected offer covers this element. A similar situation applies to continuation of treatment after an accident in Poland, the costs of which are usually limited and the use of it involves the payment of an additional premium.

Insurance extension, i.e. winter sports
A trip abroad related to practicing amateur sports should be indicated in the policy, as it may have a direct impact on the premium amount. When choosing a package, you should extend the protection to include practicing winter sports, which will not only allow you to cover your sports equipment with an additional insurance amount, but also, in combination with assistance, cover other costs in the event of illness or accident.
- Unused ski pass,
- Ski equipment rentals,
- Accommodation in the event of an avalanche.

Extreme sports cost dearly
Finally, a few words about an option that may be of interest to people looking for a stronger experience in the mountains. If you intend to ski or snowboard off-piste, go bobsledding or ski mountaineering, you should extend the scope of your policy to include practicing extreme/high-risk sports. The basic extension, covering winter sports, applies primarily to skiing and snowboarding treated in an amateur manner, while more risky activities will not be covered. For the assumptions we made the cost of including extreme sports in ski insurance ranges from approximately PLN 277 to PLN 503 depending on the offer and accepted insurance sums.
